Lions are called the ‘Kings of the Jungle,’ for a reason. They are strong, intelligent and highly capable apex predators which means they sit at the top of the food chain in their habitats. While they don’t have many natural enemies, they do still face significant threats in the wild. Here are the top five threats to this regal beast.
1. Humans
While many humans appreciate the majesty of lions and understand their place in the wild, we are also their greatest threat. From using their habitat for farming crops and animals to poaching them for their skins and body parts, humans have played a huge role in the reduction of lion numbers over the past century. Sadly it is largely down to us that these magnificent creatures are struggling to survive - which is why conservation efforts and education are so important.
2. Rival Lions
Another threat to lions is rival lions. Male lions frequently compete with other males for control of a pride, and this can result in pride numbers being significantly reduced. When a takeover occurs, incoming males often kill existing cubs so that their own offspring will have a better chance of survival. Male lions also fight over territory and the prey that comes with it. If a pride leader smells an intruder and boundaries are crossed, there is often conflict.
3. Hyenas
There are many ways to learn about lions, from reading a book about a lion to watching documentaries. But one thing that often comes up is the conflict between lions and hyenas. The spotted hyena is a fierce competitor and a top predator, with the two creatures regularly fighting over food, territory and carcasses. Large clans of hyenas can even drive lions away from a kill which can impact their survival in the wild. When lions have the chance, they tend to kill hyenas to reduce competition for food.
4. Buffalo
If you read a book on lion prey and hunting skills, you’ll quickly find out that African buffalo are among the most dangerous prey that a lion can hunt. While lions usually hunt in groups, buffalo are powerful, heavily built, and capable of defending themselves with sharp horns. An injured buffalo can seriously wound or even kill a lion. For a hungry pride, however, the risk is sometimes worth it.
5. Crocodiles
With lions being land-based creatures and crocodiles spending most of their time in water, lions can generally avoid contact with these sharp-toothed creatures. However, dangerous encounters can still occur during necessary river crossings or when lions are hunting near to water. Large Nile crocodiles can kill an adult lion, particularly if they attack quickly and take a lion by surprise.
